August 12, 2006: Night Commuter Numbers Decrease, Yet Children Still Vulnerable

According to a report from UNICEF, the number of child "night commuters" in northern Uganda has drastically decreased to about 4,000, which many attribute to the improving security situation in the region. However, humanitarian aid workers say many children are still forced to night commute despite improved security because of the breakdown of family support networks in their homes. August 11, 2006: Govt. Demands LRA Release Women and Kids Before Ceasefire

With 32 days left to the set peace talks deadline, the government has laid out stern conditions for a ceasefire and peace agreement with the rebels. Top on the government demands "as a matter of priority" is the release of all children and women under the LRA captivity to the United Nations Children’s fund (UNICEF). The government demands also included that the LRA provide "relevant information on its forces and equipment" spelling out in precise detail, "the strength and positions of its forces, full particulars of the members of its forces, inventories of its arms and ammunitions and other military equipment."
