In response to the news that the Government of Uganda will engage the Juba peace talks and offer amnesty to LRA commanders in a peace deal, Uganda-CAN applauds the government's leadership. Willingness to exhaust all opportunities for peace shows government commitment to the protection of its citizens. Further news of government plans to compensate victims of the war and secure resettlement homes adds to this good will. With the backing of the Southern Sudanese, the scrutiny of the world and the buy-in of key stakeholders, these peace talks may be the best opportunity to end the war in the last decade. Uganda-CAN urges Kony and LRA leadership to take this government offer and agree to a peace deal that will finally end the 20-year war in northern Uganda. Uganda-CAN further urges the international community to support these talks and a secure return of all displaced peoples to their homes.

Uganda-CAN country director Stephen Okello was quoted yesterday on Voice of America's report on peace talks between the LRA and Ugandan government. Okello said, "The underlying cause [of the war] is ethnic. It needs a political solution...By having the LRA indicted by the ICC is not going to help anyone. The issue is not getting punishment for the LRA, the issue is healing the wounds of division in Uganda between the South and the North." Read more at VOA News.
