May 03, 2006: Mother's Day Campaign

Mother's Day is a special opportunity for each of us to thank our mother for the life and love she has given to us. However, for the mothers of northern Uganda, this holiday is yet another painful reminder of the twenty-year-war that has taken their children from them.

More than 30,000 children have been abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), forced to become child soldiers and sex slaves. The ones who escape abduction – up to 35,000 – are forced to walk nightly from their rural homes to town centers, where they sleep on streets to avoid kidnapping. Hundreds of thousands more are left to endure disease and malnutrition in squalid displacement camps.

This Mother’s Day, give the mothers of northern Uganda the greatest possible gift: the safe return of their children. Take the following steps:

Donate to northern Uganda peace advocacy.

Send a Uganda-CAN Mother's Day Card to your mother telling her that you've showed your appreciaion for her love by donating to a campaign to end the war in northern Uganda.

Send a Uganda-CAN Mother's Day Letter to First Lady Laura Bush urging her to sympathize with the mothers of northern Uganda and take action to end this war.
